Following a landmark ruling from the European Court of Justice, A22 Sports Management – the company behind the European Super League – has unveiled plans for a new two-team competition.
The league will consist entirely of La Liga’s two most iconic clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, who will play each other 32 times per season – with games split between the Bernabeu, the Nou Camp, and a number of neutral grounds around the world, with the aim of decreasing the reliance on legacy fans and attracting a more international audience.
‘It’s what the fans want,’ said A22 Sports CEO Bernd Reichart. ‘We’ve conducted market research on Twitter for nearly a year now, and we can say this with absolute certainty.’
‘Nobody wants to see Barcelona facing off with the likes of Getafe. The viewing figures speak for themselves – the fans want El Classico, and now, they get to witness it every week of the season, every season, forever and ever, for the remainder of time.’
Having taken fan feedback on board, the revamped Super League will also feature promotion and relegation, with the second-place team each year relegated from the top tier ‘star’ division into the ‘shiny moon’ division consisting of Real Madrid B and Barcelona B.
Asked whether this could result in both teams facing off against their respective B teams for an entire season, Reichart appeared flustered, telling reporters, ‘Well, yes, we’ve obviously considered that eventuality. I mean, of course. But this shows we are listening to the fans. We know the pyramid is important to them, and we’ve implemented it as best we can, even if the pyramid is shaped like a square.’
Real Madrid’s first Super League match won’t be an easy one. They will face off against bitter rivals Barcelona on August 5th in Beijing as their rivals Barcelona go head to head with Super League favourites Real Madrid.
